St. Wenceslas Lager

At the end of September, we traditionally toast St. Wenceslas, the patron saint of Czech beer, brewers and maltsters. This year, we have for you a light St. Wenceslas lager, which stands out with a pleasant bitterness, medium fullness and high carbonation. May it be a good companion for all who taste it this year. 🍻

It will be on tap at our business partners from Friday 19 September. Of course, it will also be available at the St. Wenceslas Festival on the square and in the Brewery Garden. Gift packs can be purchased at the reception of Port 1560, in the company shop Lahvárna ČK, in the Brewery Restaurant and in selected shops in the city centre.

And how did St. Wenceslas actually come to his patronage?

The famous Czech saint and prince of the Přemyslid family is not only the main patron of the Czech nation, but also of Czech beer and brewers. St. Wenceslas was appointed to this position in 1357 by Charles IV himself, who held him in high esteem. However, the saint was already considered the patron saint of maltsters. Even though it is unbelievable today in the case of such a prominent saint, he himself was said to have been quite fond of drinking beer and, according to contemporary sources, often overdid it. Although this is not very honourable for him as a saint, he at least rightly earned his position.

And since St. Wenceslas celebrates his feast at the end of September, the Days of Czech Beer are also celebrated at this time. The tradition was established by the Czech Brewery and Maltsters Association in 2013 to strengthen pride and the relationship to the Czech national drink. So if you like to enjoy a glass of the golden beverage from time to time, now is the best time to do so. Specifically, Wednesday 28 September is Beer Drinking Day. You can go out with friends to a restaurant or get a supply to take home. It’s up to you. Cheers! 🍻
